Microsoft announces the 85% faster Surface Laptop 2

It's still not the best device for the Surface Pen.

Microsoft announced the original surface laptop just over a year ago. Back then, it was an easy recommendation for anyone in the market for a high-end Windows laptop, especially if you were a student. Today, Microsoft announced it’s successor, the Surface Laptop 2. The new Laptop addresses many of the concerns people had with the original, while still maintaining a few.

A significant issue with the original Laptop was it’s stock configuration of RAM, which came in at a scarce 4GB. This was fine if you stuck to Windows 10 S, which limited you to apps from the Microsoft Store. However, if you wanted to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, it was wise to spring for more RAM. The Laptop 2 now comes with 8GB in the base model, making it a much easier configuration to recommend. The processors are also improved, having been stepped up to Intel’s current 8th generation i5 and i7 CPUs. Microsoft is promising an 85% boost in speed over the original Laptop. We will have to wait and see if it lives up to that. The rest of the hardware remains largely untouched. The Laptop 2 features the same ports, display, and alcantara covered keyboard as the previous model. There are still no USB C ports to be found here, an upset for many. I also would like to have heard mention of more wear-resistant fabric, but there was nothing on that either.

The design of the Laptop 2 still looks a bit dated when compared to some of the competition. Many laptops in this price range feature bezel-less displays that make them look significantly more modern. The one design change Microsoft did announce was the option for a matte black finish. This is the same finish as the new Surface Pro 6 that Microsoft also announced today. This option does look slick, but it’s not enough to make it stand out from the competition.

Like the Surface Pro 6, the Laptop 2 is available for pre-order starting today. The base model will run you the same $999 as the original, Including the 8GB or RAM. Orders will arrive at your door on the 16th.
